Tips for problem dry skin

If you're like me, you probably have itchy, dry sensitive skin. Well after seeing my dermatologist, and learning some things about skin care, I will share with you what I've learned, without the $75.00 price tag!

1.) When bathing, don't use hot water! Hot water dries the skin out very quickly, and will make it itchy as well. Use luke warm water for bathing, or if you are daring enough, use cold water to bath. It is very refreshing, and will help keep your skin soft.

2.) Also when bathing, use an unscented body wash instead of bar soap. Body wash is milder than soap, and rinses off better. I would suggest using Dove sensitive skin body wash. Also, it is good to use an in shower moisturizer after you have cleansed your skin. I would suggest using Aveeno Bath and Shower Oil. You smooth this all over your skin, then rinse it off, and then pat yourself dry with a towel. To get your skin to be softer, and hold more moisture, go ahead and turn up the cold water and cover yourself with it before you apply the bath oil. Apply the bath oil, then rinse off with the cold water. This will do wonders for your skin. You should see results in about a week.

3.) Use a body lotion. A great one that I use is called Nivea. You can apply this daily, all over your body after your shower or bath, and during the day when needed. Make sure to thoroughly rub the lotion into your skin. You want your skin to absorb the lotion as much as possible!

4.) When doing your laundry, you may want to use a detergent without the perfumes or dyes. Yes I know your clothes will lack that fresh detergent smell, but your skin will thank you for it. Don't worry, it still gets your clothes just as clean. Oh yeah, if you must have that fresh scent, it's ok to use scented fabric softener, otherwise, you can use unscented fabric softeners as well. (Hint: you can actually use distilled white vinegar as a natural fabric softener. It won't leave an odor at all, and it will brighten your clothes.)

5.) Try to avoid excessive sunlight and excessive exposure to heat and cold. Also, take a daily multivitamin supplement, and drink plenty of water. The multivitamin will provide a lot of the nutrients your skin needs to heal and repair itself, and of course, the water will help hydrate your skin, and help all those nutrients flow through your body.

Well, that's pretty much it. Pretty simple right? Caring for your skin is pretty simple, once you figure out how it works, and what it needs. Now go and moisturize!

Contributor's Note

I wanted to emphasize that anyone can do these very simple things to help keep their skin well moisturized. All of these steps may not be required for everyone, and some may require more steps, at that point it is probably a good idea to actually go see a dermatologist.
